REVIEW: What's for Dinner, Des Moines
Submitted by Waterbury Mom
I have been a regular at What’s For Dinner (WFD) Des Moines for almost 2 years now, and I LOVE IT.
As a working mom, not having to think about what’s for dinner every night has been a godsend! Prior to becoming a regular at WFD, our dinners consisted primarily of side dishes (Rice-a-Roni, Pasta-Roni) or quesadillas in the microwave. But now we enjoy chicken, pork chops and other yummy delights every night.
I have an aversion to buying meat, so this has enabled me to serve meat to my family without having to buy it. Now all I’ve got to do is to remember to pull one out of freezer a few days ahead of time. If I’m feeling adventuresome, I may add a side dish or two (my personal favorite is the microwave rice – all you’ve got to do is tear the bag and nuke it for 90 seconds)! My husband says he never eaten so well!
The way it works is pretty easy. You get to select 12 of their 14 entrees, including dessert and breakfast items. You can double up on some of the entrees if there aren’t 12 that you like on the menu. (I’ll be honest that not every single entrée is a homerun, but as long as you read the descriptions of the entrees before you order them, you should do just fine in selecting the ones that fit your family’s palate.) We’ve only had one entrée in 2 years that we couldn’t eat. Among our favorites are the enchiladas, peanut crusted pork chops and their kung pow chicken!
You register online (they have a great website) for a time that is convenient for you OR you can, for a small additional fee, arrange to have them prepare it for you to pick up. You can either do a full session (12 meals each serving 4-6) or you can do a split session with a friend to get 12 meals that serve 2-3.
They also have half sessions and other options for different types of families. Right now, I do the small family pick-up pack because, since the birth of my second daughter, I haven’t quite figured out how to get out of the house by myself for more than an hour. Prior to that, I would go every month with one of my mom friends for 2 hours of adult time!
Here’s what their website says about the cost:
"We didn’t want to do it, but we have to increase our price in April. I’m sure you have all noticed ingredients at the grocery store creeping up. In an effort to continue offering high quality food and satisfying portions we need to adjust our prices. Full sessions will be $220 and Half sessions will be $115. The good news is that there are no longer splitting fees and it is still around $3 per serving."
It may seem like a lot of money, but let me tell you, it’s really not. When you do the math, it works out to about $3/serving, which is well worth it for our family. It’s generally enough food to serve my husband and I, as well as my 3-year-old and many times a serving for me to bring to work for lunch! They also get a “frequent freezer card” and plan ahead perks, which help make it even more affordable!
Give it a try; you’ll never go back to cooking everynight!
